New, Exclusive Solid Gold Buttons

I’m delighted to share with you more information about our exclusive solid gold buttons recently launched on our website. These have been a real labour of love over the last 9 months and everyone at B&B is thrilled with the result.

Over recent years we have had numerous enquiries, particularly from our UAE customers, about whether we held stock of real gold buttons. After extensive research, I found that it is relatively easy to source gold plated blazer buttons; but nothing as unique as solid gold buttons for a suit or tuxedo jacket.

Having spoken to several contacts in the button world, Mrs. Rose of Taylors Buttons referred me to Stephen Rothholz, a Hatton Garden jeweller, who in turn suggested that I contact Stephen Einhorn.  Stephen Einhorn is a long-established specialist jeweller based in Islington, London. His cutting-edge and creative designs are admired for their high quality and exclusivity, often producing one of a kind, bespoke items for private customers as well as for Hollywood films and television projects. One thing that attracted me to Stephen’s business was the interesting parallels with B&B as we supply linings and fabrics to production companies in the entertainment sector.

“To be asked by Jonathan Bernstein to make something as special as these bespoke gold and pavé diamond buttons was a real pleasure and also a challenge. Each design had its own technical difficulties and each pavé button was set with 99 calibrated round brilliant cut diamonds. Bernstein and Banleys value craftsmanship as much as we do – it was a perfect fit for both companies.” – Stephen Einhorn

As with all Stephen’s designs, our buttons have been handmade in their London workshops. We commissioned Stephen Einhorn to initially produce two styles of button for us. Firstly, a traditional 4-hole gold button, similar to our Mother of Pearl buttons where the holes are very small and close together. This distinctiveness means that they can only be sewn on by hand and not by an industrial machine. Secondly, a tapestry weave style button inspired by a 1950s Tiffany & Co. design I had found during my research.

Whilst designing these two styles it was suggested by Stephen that the gold buttons would look spectacular with pavé set diamonds. These were consequently designed and hand set – each rhodium plated white gold button being set with 99 individual diamonds. Having seen the finished article, they look absolutely magnificent.

Every button has been hallmarked by the London Assay office showing the Stephen Einhorn makers mark (SE), the Gold mark (Crown), the Fineness mark (375), the London Assay Office mark (Panther Head) and the 2017 Year Date mark (S). Each set is available in a presentation box of “2 and 8” – 2 large front and 8 small cuff buttons, which is the traditional number of buttons for a single-breasted jacket.

We are very excited to see the continued reaction to the buttons as to date we have received favourable comments from both our trade and web based customers. Over the next few weeks we will be exhibiting at the Textile Forum in London and the IATF in Dubai where the buttons will take pride of place amongst our varied collections.
